Choosing the Life of Jesus

Saturday, 12 May 2012 05:53 Published in Dabar - Word in Action
John 15:18-21

For some, the best way to live a stress-free life is to be neutral and always take the safe side. Even if they have an opinion on certain issues, they choose not to react to avoid arguments and prospective enemies.

True Disciples

Jn 6:60-69

Someone who is really into reading can be judged by the number of books he has read.  That is, finished reading to the end.  The type of book can come into play as it is quite easy to finish an interesting book in one sitting if the plot or story perfectly suits our preference.

What Impresses God Most

Saturday, 17 March 2012 07:18 Published in Dabar - Word in Action
Luke 18:9-14

Being a preacher (or speaker) has taught me the sensitivity of finding a good balance between caution and responsibility to proclaim the truth.  The sole control of the microphone can be so tempting at times to put down other people and lift ourselves instead.

Thus, if there are things I always remind myself to be very careful with as a preacher, top on my list would be the pitfall of sounding self-righteous.  As if I am without sin.  As if I do not have weaknesses of my own.  As if being a speaker justly gives me the license to pass judgment.

Two things work for me to counter pride and self-righteousness – every time.  One is to always check my motives in doing things. That is,  repeatedly asking myself questions like, “Am I really doing this for the love of God and His people, and not for myself?” “Am I being generous because I want to honor God’s goodness, and not because I want to be esteemed for such kindness?” Second, though I am in a ministry, I always remind myself that I remain to be a sinner, and in dire need of God’s mercy.  Meaning, I have no right to claim holiness and worthiness. I am just as sinful, and in need of grace to overcome the daily battle with temptations.

Both measures call for a great deal of honesty and humility. Tough measures, yes, but these are the difficulties I would rather accept anytime. They
alone can assure me that I will be divinely guided.

The parable in the Gospel again reminds us what impresses God most.  The tax collector with a penitent heart won God’s favor more than the Pharisee who boasted his piousness. Unknowingly, we too, act like the Pharisee when we see ourselves better than others.

Friends, no amount of works can  delight the Lord more than a contrite spirit. What impresses Him most is our humility to admit that we are just fallen creatures in desperate need of God’s mercy and forgiveness.

Prayer:
O Lord, help us to always admit our sins and seek Your grace for us to serve with a humble heart.  Amen.

Rewards at the Mountaintop

Mark 9:2-13

One of the things in my bucket list is to wake up to a glorious sunrise atop Mount Pulag in Benguet. A photo with the Pulag velvety clouds as immaculate background would just be a perfect souvenir of a very memorable climb. Hopefully, I will get to finally do it within the next three years. Until I have done so, I will just content myself looking at other people's pictures and their narrative of a soulful experience.
